What Happens During IVF Therapy?
The program of IVF procedure can be different depending on the patient’s situation. In this article we will consider a typical situation, but your own could be very different.
First the woman will be given drugs which will manage her monthly cycle. Typically, she’s going to first take drugs to stop ovulation, then when the signs are right, she will be given an injection that will induce the production of several eggs.
A few days afterwards, she will visit the hospital to have the eggs removed from her womb. In the meantime the man will deliver a sperm sample, unless donor sperm is being used. Then medical staff will fertilize the eggs using the sperm in the laboratory.
A few days subsequently, the woman will return to a medical facility to have the fertilized eggs inserted back into the womb. Typically, more than one fertilized egg is implanted. This gives a better chance of success. Occasionally more than one egg will be productive, so there may be twins, triplets or maybe more.
About two weeks afterwards, the female will have a normal pregnancy test to determine whether one or more of the eggs has successfully embedded in the lining of the womb. Provided the test is positive, there exists a good possibility of the pregnancy progressing normally to birth. If it is negative, then the IVF treatment has not been successful on this occasion. Most people will try again after a few months.
What Is The Success Rate For IVF Treatment?
When looking at the success rate of IVF treatment, remember that the success rate is dependent on the suitability of the patients. For example if doctors only provide IVF on patients who are perfectly suited to it, the success rate will be greater than if they give it to everyone who inquires, regardless of their age, medical history, etc. For this reason, the success rate for IVF can vary greatly between different states as well as countries.
